Аннотация:
The corpus of precedent phenomena represents a definite paradigm of exemplary texts of national culture. Knowledge of these texts is a necessary condition for the socialization of the individual of a particular linguistic and cultural community. The reference to these texts has high frequency, since it reflects the value scale and models of social behavior. Translation of precedent texts possesses certain difficulties, as it implies knowledge of a broad context and cultural background. This article is devoted to such statements and the purpose of it is, with the help of a survey experts, to determine the optimal options of the translation of such statements as Моя хата з краю, я нічого не знаю; Або пан, або пропав; Ще не вмерла України ні слава, ні воля; Козацькому роду нема переводу. Thus, the novelty of the study is determined by the novelty of the material for the analysis – by the options of the translation of Ukrainian precedent statements into English. The main difficulty of the translation is determined by the national and cultural specificity of the statements, which contain not only a description of customs, historical facts, features of everyday life and culture, but also valuable information containing precedent texts (for example, the anthem of Ukraine), precedent situations, etc. The results of the research give grounds to believe that the best option of translation is calquing or description. Most of the interpreters translate the statements verbatim and use borrowings when in the original exoticisms are used. Conclusions: ethno-specific, national-historical precedent statements are translated in most cases by means of calquing, and less often by descriptive means. Specialists use word-for-word translation, adding comments and explanations, such as (As the Ukrainian proverb goes... / As the Ukrainians say...).
